For several years now, IESC, the Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse, has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to the fight against climate change. We recognize the importance of taking steps to mitigate our impact on the environment, and are committed to making significant progress in this area. To achieve this goal, we have implemented a series of initiatives to help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and minimize our impact on the environment.
THE BUILDING In 2012, we created a building with a very low environmental impact. the conceptual scheme is based on precise architectural choices coupled to innovative energetic solutions in the aim to optimize energy consumption and ideally to approach the construction of a zero net energy building. Architectural choices are simple: a compact design, an inner concrete nucleus highly inert and an efficient insulation by light exterior walls. These elementary concepts are coupled to solar panel production of hot water for heating and sanitary uses. The theoretical estimation approaches 100% efficiency by a precise optimization of concrete surfaces and reservoir balloons. Seasonal comfort in summer is provided by natural ventilation coupled to air fan and solar fences.
CATERING
Water fountains Water fountains have been installed on our sites. These fountains offer tempered or fresh water, connected to the Cargèse municipal water network.
Glass bottles A few years ago, we replaced plastic water bottles with reusable glass bottles.
Tableware We use porcelain and glassware to limit disposability, as well as recyclable cardboard cups.
Menus have also been studied, vegetarian and vegan meals are offered. Knowing the number of people on site each day enables us to reduce the production of food waste.
Waste management
The easiest waste to deal with is the one we don’t produce. However, collection points enable us to recover waste according to its composition, so that it can be processed in the appropriate channels. Green catering waste is recycled using an on-site vermicompost.
Fruit and vegetable rinse water is recovered and stored in 2 tanks for domestic recycling.
Recycling garbage cans are available for visitors.
To avoid the use of plastic bottles, we offer water bottles for sale.
Our accommodation linen is laundered by a dry cleaner use only Ecolabel cleaning products.
IES Cargèse has a fleet of electric vehicles and solar-powered recharging stations for all uses, including commuting to the village and on-site logistics and the coach operator we work with has signed the ADEME charter, EURO6+ since 2022
LOCALISATION
The Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques was built in Cargèse, Corsica, on a 10-hectare site by the sea, where numerous convivial areas have been laid out for discussion, reflection and relaxation. All local shops are a 20-minute walk away.
IES Cargèse is located on an island, so it can only be reached by boat or plane. Transport is therefore the area in which participants are most committed to reducing their overall carbon footprint, with train travel favored for mainland journeys. With regard to access to Corsica by sea or air, it is worth noting that the airline Air Corsica was awarded the «Palme d’or» for environmental involvement in October 2022 by the French Senate, that the shipping company Corsica Linea has been recertified with the "Green Marine Europe" label in 2023, and that La Méridionale has a boat, Le Piana, equipped with a fine-particle filter.
In addition, the SAILCOOP cooperative offers sailing trips between Saint-Raphaël and Calvi.
