Fripon Project
The FRIPON (Fireball Recovery and Interplanetary Observation Network) project was originally conceived by a team of six French scientists from the Paris Observatory (IMCCE), the National Museum of Natural History (IMPMC), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris-Saclay University (GEOPS), and Aix-Marseille University (LAM / CEREGE / OSU Pythéas). It received a grant from the French National Research Agency (ANR) in 2013 to install a network of CCD (charged-coupled device) cameras and radio receivers to cover the entire territory of France.
The FRIPON network already has four sites in Corsica; the addition of a fifth site will expand the project’s geographic coverage, thereby improving the ability to monitor meteors across the entire French territory.
The IES Cargèse, with its unique geographical and atmospheric characteristics, is an ideal location for a FRIPON camera and will provide an optimal environment for observing the night sky and detecting meteors.
